Rita Ora’s style has been killin it lately.  Her bleached bob, matte red lips and Cara Delevingne-rivaling eyebrows have become her signature along with her eclectic street glam ensembles.

She has become one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram for all of the above – but mostly because it showcases that she is a regular, goofy, adorable, bad ass chick!

Dear Rita, can we be friends?

“Can you ever just be whelmed? I think you can in Europe”

Nothing like a solid Legally Blonde quote to best describe my feelings after tuning in to the 2014 Golden Globes on Sunday.  Although there were definitely some hits, I can count the amount of “gasp!” moments on an alien’s 3 fingered hand.

There is lots to discuss so let’s get started:

Most Controversial:

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.44.24 AM Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.43.45 AM

There is a range the size of Texas of opinions on both of these looks.  But I think Zoe’s Prabal Gurung cocktail frock was a breath of fresh fashion air!  While JLaw’s Dior appeared ill fitting and uncomfortable.

Most likely to make me buy more midnight blue:

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.45.40 AM Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 10.36.30 AM

There’s something about midnight blue.  It’s like black, but cooler.  Amber Heard in Versace and Adel Exarchopoulos (please get new, shorter last name thanks) in Mui Mui.  Stunning!

Most likely to make younger actresses look bad:

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.45.07 AM Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 10.35.27 AM

Are these the bodies of a 45 and 68 year old?!!?  Not any that I know!  Robin Wright and Helen Mirren look better in these gowns than most women half their age.  Helen in Jenny Packham and Robin in Reem Acra.

Most upsetting:

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.45.17 AM Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.44.16 AM Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.44.05 AM Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.44.47 AM Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 10.36.38 AM

Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein – Joan Rivers said “I have never seen a floor length sports bra”.  Couldn’t have said it better myself Joan.

Amy Adams in Valentino – pretty sure I have this maxi dress and have worn it to multiple summer BBQ’s.

Kate Mara in J Mendel – All I can see is the butt on her chest and the Judy Jetson sleeves.  I love her and I love J Mendel.  Wish she would have worn this one instead (sorry E Moss).

Lena Duhnam in Zac Posen – She’s so uncomfortable she’s posen like she can’t breathe 😉

Julie Bowen in Carolina Hererra – this has all of the ingredients for a do but managed to be a don’t.  Those puff sleeves, that matchy matchy clutch…just doesn’t work sister.

Most likely to become a fashion leader:

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.44.30 AM

Margot Robbie in Gucci – she was the most searched name on Bing Sunday night. I think I know why…Perfection!

My #1 pick for Best Dressed at the 2014 Globes is….

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 9.44.53 AMScreen Shot 2014-01-16 at 1.50.43 PM

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive!  She is the very definition of REGAL but manages to always remind you that she is a sexy lady.  I want to be her when I grow up Mom.

See you at the Oscar’s!

In October, I was ‘lucky’ enough to attend the fashion and beauty blogger event put on by Lucky magazine, called Lucky Fabb.  It was a 2 day event of taste makers, social media gurus & entrepreneurs who have literally revolutionized the online shopping experience (think Warby Parker & Birchbox).  I was blown away by all the inspiring people there…both who came to speak and who attended.  I’d love to get into details with you about each and every one of them (Kate Bosworth, Jess Lee, Tamara Mellon, Bryan Boy, & Katia Beauchamp just to name a few) but for now, let’s talk about the one that inspired this post (and a very expensive purchase for M&L)…Adam Katz Sinding of Le21eme.

If you’re as obsessed with street style as we are, then you most likely are familiar with his work, which can often be identified by the tilted camera angles and the top of the subject’s head cut off.  I have to admit, I literally had no idea what Adam was talking about most of the seminar.  It was VERY technical and I felt like the only person in the room who had no insight to share into apertures or wide angle lenses.  But his pics spoke for themselves and the lightbulb went off in my head, “I want to do this!”.  So about a month later Laurel and I find ourselves aimlessly wandering around the massive Willa Wonka esque B&H Photo (the 2nd largest camera store in the world!) and leaving with this little beauty EOS Rebel Sl-1.

With the way the weather has been in NY, I haven’t been able to take my hands out of my gloves long enough to take any street style shots (though I did manage to get a good shot of the New York Public Library on one particularly freezing walk home from Zara) but please enjoy our photography debut of other inspiring things…from architecture to the loves of our lives (sorry mom, it’s not a man) and stay tuned for what’s sure to be some amazing street style photography (I hope!)

Icona-Style!

First comes fashion, then comes food – add a little live music and you pretty much have the M&L formula to happiness!

Had the pleasure of seeing the Icona Pop show last night in Hollywood.  This Swedish duo not only brings the bubble gum beats but their unique and kitschy style as well!  Last night they wore these complimentary Judy Jetson-esque ensembles, which they originally debuted at America’s Got talent:

Love the way they manage to go from androgynous to Spice Girl in zero-to-sixty!  Often in black and white with hits of hologram and sequins – you can tell they have a blast with their semi-matching get ups (hint hint Madison)

And for the encore:

Cowboys and…Couture?

I love themes.  For birthdays, holidays, Tuesdays – I am always game for a good costume, especially if it involves costume changes.

But when I heard Karl Lagerfeld would be showing the Chanel Pre-Fall 2014 collection in Dallas Texas, complete with bull riding and bbq, I was a little (as Madison and I say) cornfused.  Chanel and cowboys?  huh?

Took just a few minutes of google’ing to learn that this has been an annual show since the mid 80’s and commemorates Coco Chanel’s reintroduction back into the fashion world after a 15 year hiatus.  To Dallas she went after her hometown rejected her.  Typical Frenchies!

As you would imagine, the range was thick with Americana references and mood.  Although over the top at first glance, there were actually many peices that spoke to me once I separated them and re-oufitted them for real life in my mind.  Also looking forward to seeing these styled in the pages of our favorite mags very soon!

So many details and embroideries to take in.  Will definitely be putting these to use when designing for our customers:

Having a moment – Aritzia graphics

Graphics tees can do so much for an outfit.  They have the power to instantly dress down a formal bottom, they can add style to an otherwise boring outfit, and increase your cool factor with the right vintage rock band reference and/or ironic saying.

The Canadian retailer Aritzia is typically known for their wearable translation of high fashion shapes and use of high quality silky fabrications.  However, they have been bringing some very cool, edgy graphic tee’s into the mix lately.  Love how they merchandise back to the more sophisticated pieces in their assortment.

“Work-ish” refers to the fact that I am well aware that we work in fashion, and thus can usually rock almost anything to work as long as it’s pulled together.  My sister, the lawyer who wears suits everyday, would dispute me naming that look “work” so it became “work-ish” 🙂

Visit Aritzia.com if you don’t have one near you and pick up one of these guys:

New series: Where We Ate, November ’13 Market Edition

Second to fashion of course, we here at Madison and Laurel consider ourselves quite the foodies.  We’re no Anthony Bourdain, but we have been exploring new restaurants cuisines, bars, and coffee houses since we laid eyes on each other.  If co-ordering were in the Olympics, I guarantee you, we would at least win silver.

Market weeks allow us 1 solid week a month to pack in the spots we must try together and we (well I’m really the reso whore of the group) typically have made at least 2/night in preparation.

Especially in New York, every spot and neighborhood calls for a different look.  Although our ensembles may include more elastic waistbands and voluminous baby dolls than we’d prefer to allow for maximum culinary enjoyment, here are a few of the places we dined in last week that made our “YOU MUST TRY” list.  Oh and “WHAT YOU’RE WEARING” to each.  Aren’t we bossy?

#1 – THE MEATBALL SHOP

Screen Shot 2013-11-12 at 5.43.11 PM

We dined on both their brunch AND their dinner menu (overachievers).  It’s easy to go healthy here and just do a “naked ball” which is an ala carte order of meatballs/chickenballs/veggieballs/balls du jour and pair that with one of their fresh veggie side dishes.  Doesn’t matter which location you’re visiting, this is a hipster’s paradise!

Outfit idea: Quilted hot shorts with contrast black piping, Lush Clothing for Pacific Sunwear.  Purchase here.  Collared zip-back cropped blouse in kitschy cat print from Urban Outfitters found here.  Throw on some black opaque tights, these Essex eyelet flats from Pixie market, and a high bun.  Hipster spot, check!

#2: AMERICAN CUT

Screen Shot 2013-11-12 at 7.10.11 PM

Within the first 5 minutes, Iron Chef and personal buddy of M&L Marc Forgione, was going table by table, shaving truffles onto customers dishes.  Um, yes please!  Dishes to highlight – the shrimp cocktail (trust us), the MF’ing steak sauce, and the pumpkin cheesecake.  Pure carnivore heaven!

Outfit: this is a dressier spot so let’s throw on this lace t-back dress in regal purple from the trendy GB department at Dillard’s.  If there’s not a Dillard’s in your area, you can buy online here.

#3:FONDA RESTAURANT

Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.30.31 PM

You are looking at their happy hour menu because that’s all we ordered from.  Being from Cali, and living in San Diego for a while, I am a tough critic when it comes to comida mexicana.  But the authentic guac, flautas, spicy margaritas and our adorable bartender made me give this spot a gel manicured thumbs up!

Outfit:  You are now in the East Village.  Keep it casual.  Try, but don’t try.  Got it?  We just delivered this high neck chiffon tank with dot mesh insets in 3 print options.  Click here and pick your poison.  While you’re there, this affordable and trendy retailer also has these dip-dyed skinnys that will pair perfectly back to your oversized tank.

Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.49.30 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.49.35 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.49.41 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.49.44 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.49.49 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.49.53 PM

Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.45.29 PM Screen Shot 2013-11-15 at 4.45.49 PM

And that is the end of our Top 3!  You went hipster, you went boogie, and you finished off with a hot Latino and a bill under $50.  Stay tuned for the December Market Edition!

Initially I had planned this post around how clutch this tee will be during music festival season but with the 18 degree windchill factor here in NYC this morning, I just could not bring myself to google search the perfect high waisted cut offs & gladiator sandals.  So I switched gears into how to winterize the perfect cropped tee.  We recently delivered this one to Urban Outfitters and I’m telling you…it’s a gem.  Quality is super soft & the dark heather grey and raw edges give it that perfect ‘what? this old thing?’ feel.  I personally don’t love showing my belly so these high waisted leather pants get to work concealing the short ribs and gnocchi someone may or may not have had for dinner last night (#wortheverycalorie).  The salt n pepper cardi is a more fun alternative to plain black but just as versatile…this one’s on sale which makes me like it even more.  Then slip into your favorite shoe booties, something you can dance in (I got heart palpitations when I spotted these) and head to an INDOOR music show for now….Daft Punk tribute band perhaps?? YOUNG & REBELLIOUS

The 2014 Spring/Summer shows sent fresh pastel color palettes, athletic influences in the form of soft pants and raglan tees, and crop top’d ensembles down the runways.  So many innovative concepts – it’s enough to make your sartorial head spin!

Luckily, many designers included the ever sleek and modern use of black and white to make us all feel a little more comfortable when testing the waters of new shapes like asymmetrical hem’d mini’s and patterns like geo’s and tribal’s.
